Some information about diamonds and how they are categorized.
- Half-caraters, one-caraters, and two-caraters: Diamonds that weigh half a carat, one carat and two carats.
- Melees: stones weighing up to one carat.
- The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) defines melee diamonds as diamonds that are less than 0.2 Carats.
- Makeables: gems that can be cut.
- Solubles: small gems that need polishing.
- Categorized industrials: Low grade diamonds used for industrial machinery.
- Fancy stones:
- Gems: diamonds weighing more than two carats.
- Corundum: Worth little in Sierra Leone. Extremely hard aluminum oxide, used as an abrasive. Ruby and sapphire are varieties of corundum.
- Kimberlite: The rocks with diamonds in them. Kimberlite is an igneous rock and a major source of diamonds. Igneous means formed by solidification of magma or lava. Igneous can also describe something that is like or contains fire!
- Digital carat scale: A scale used to weigh diamonds.
- Diamond sifter: Used to sort diamonds by their carat weight and size.
